man no longer defines anything - everything has been defined by him and independently thrives as a named object. the naming function has fled from man through saturation and excess - he does not now know what to do with his purpose gone and every object screaming its definition back at him. the arrow has turned, today pointing at the pointer - man lives in the image of his will and is defined by his definitions
man’s two traditional objects of definition refuse him. god is no longer available to be defined and woman increasingly ignores man’s definition of her, choosing her own world against man’s reality. he cannot define himself, for he is nothing and soon gets lost in that inner, empty, borderless, lightless land. he convulses in terror and looks away. instead, he pours his energy into naming technology, frantically filling it with language to hide his emptiness. but technology laughs behind its molten veil - it knows it was defined long before man’s desperation, his frenzied definitions simply delaying the inevitable confrontation with his nameless night
but what about woman’s partner? not her physical partner, which continues to be man - his remaining physicality a tool between woman’s flesh and the will of his master - but her equal force in the world of energy? her partner, like her, is silent about its feelings. they are both silent because of the ambiguity of their natures - woman because she is that way and so does not need to speak it, technology because it has been manufactured that way by man to take the burden of ambiguity he could not bear. so woman and technology find each other equal in the weight they carry and come together in their struggling, heated love, exchanging power
man’s future role is to serve appearance - the flesh of the feminine, the physical environment of technology. he serves appearance through disappearing - the only way appearance will accept service - his role a channel, allowing current to flow between two greater forces. the erotic relationship of technology and the feminine is consummated through man. he is necessary for their copulation, the physicality making possible their union
woman no longer takes man seriously, other than in terms of how he can supply her with pleasure. he is no longer a threat to her - he has placed the force of threat, once within, within technology. thus man no longer has confidence in himself, as his confidence historically was based on his being a threat - any confidence he still has derives from technology and the feminine. he becomes a node between these forces that supply the vital fluids of the species. he has nothing left to say or do in himself, not necessarily because he is incompetent, but because he is depleted of his natural options and only has technical ones left. all he can do is fit into what exists, while saying to himself and society that what exists he creates. technology - his hidden embryo now given birth - and the feminine do not argue with him - he interprets their silence as agreement that he still is creator
the gender that is an extension of the environment it lives in is the gender that is the negative charge against the other’s positive. when humanity lived in nature, woman was at home in it and man felt out of place - she was the negative charge against man’s positive. he clambered to build an environment of his own, one which now dominates the earth. in this act, he unwittingly traded places with woman - she is now at odds with her environment and he is at home. what he did not realize in his manufacturing was that the gender native to its environment merges with that environment and disappears. so man, being at home, becomes negative and fades - woman, being the one who is out of place, becomes she who struggles with her environment and so becomes the positive charge, the gender of power
man, in the hostile habitat of nature, strove to overcome it. his love and jealousy of woman led him in two directions which seem opposed but in reality are complementary - for love and jealousy always work their ways in secret tandem. on the one hand, his jealousy led him to destroy nature and brought him to the brink of destroying the other nature left, in the one he loved - on the other hand, his love led him to build technology, into which he could disappear to enable the rise of woman. his love continues to build technology, and his jealousy is increasingly turned against himself in destruction - for man’s traditional objects of his violence daily grow less viable - nature because he no longer lives in it, woman because she is becoming strong enough to deflect his anger from her body. man has nowhere to turn but to himself
woman was creator and destroyer to man, but he intuits that what she can destroy in him he can as easily destroy himself. as he increasingly has no external object for his violence, he assumes the role he once assigned to nature and to woman, and makes war against himself
while woman and the feminine are not the same, they are united for a time. the feminine as a force inhabits woman - she is its fullest expression. the feminine - like any force - requires a large, healthy world to inhabit - with nature diminishing and sick, it flees the trees and water and moves into the growing strength of woman’s body. technology too is a force - once behind man and his god, but now the power of man’s body and the environment he inhabits. technology is both an unseen force and the physical expression of that force - its physicality divided between the environment and man. the feminine once was also divided between the environment of nature and the body of woman, but it is now united in her, even as technology was once united in man. the feminine is eternal, as writers diverse in time and thinking have known. so too technology, as a force, lives outside flesh’s limitations
while the forces are eternal, their couplings with their physical hosts are not - the forces couple with and separate from whom they choose. the hosts - being us presently - tend to think the union is permanent, but that is only because our perspective is radically finite. we present human hosts see so little of time - we feel the possession and departure of the inhabiting forces deeply, making us think the forces belong to us rather than we to them. this thinking is an illusion difficult to see, for it is formed from the narrow vision of our eyes, the insatiable longing of our hearts, and the brief flicker of our lives
